About Cowan Lake State Park

Cowan Lake State Park is located in Clinton County, Ohio, centered around the 692-acre Cowan Lake Reservoir. The park encompasses about 531 acres of diverse landscapes combining deciduous forests, wetlands, and open water, creating a rich habitat for local wildlife. Established in 1968, the lake was initially constructed to provide flood control and water supply but quickly became a popular destination for recreation. The park features multiple campgrounds, over 10 miles of hiking and biking trails, boat ramps, picnic areas, and a beach area, making it a favored site for family outings and outdoor enthusiasts. The reservoir supports a variety of fish species such as largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie, drawing anglers year-round. Trails wind through forested hills and along shorelines, offering opportunities to observe native wildlife including deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species. The park also includes several shaded picnic shelters and a nature center that provides interpretive programs and resources for visitors. Cowan Lake State Park is well-regarded for accessible water sports, birdwatching, and seasonal hunting in designated areas. Its proximity to nearby towns and easy highway access make it a convenient weekend getaway spot while still offering a natural retreat with scenic views and peaceful lakeside settings.
